Some time ago, I was in charge of developing a business concern on the beautiful island of Sri Lanka while based in the United States. At one point, I needed to send an employee there to set up the quality control program. This employee did not have a GSM cell phone so I lent him mine to use “in case of emergency only”. The employee spent time each night chatting with family on the cell phone and came back with a $3,000 phone bill in two short weeks.
Finding out about how tech support is handled is also a good idea. Is it only via e-mail? That’s not much help in an emergency. If telephone support is offered, at what hours is it available? Try calling the tech Arlo wont sync several times to see how easy it is to get through.
Another thing to look at is how much a web host chargers. Cheap per month hosts likely cut their costs to ensure that they are able to make a profit. If you look around and come across a deal that is too sweet to be real, then it probably is. Keep looking. But the best way to judge a company is to see if it is turning a profit. If you come across a web host company that is publicly traded, go look up its earnings over the last several quarters. If the earnings have been good, then you can probably trust the competence of the company.
Before you can do this, however, you will most likely need to “Unlock” your cell phone. Most wireless service providers “lock” their cell phones which means that they program them to only work with SIM chips issued by their company. Unlocking a cell phone is basically reversing this programming. The process is very easy and quick.
There is also MagicJack for the iPad. MagicJack allows you to make free calls to anywhere in the United States or Canada. This is free to download and free to use. You need to make sure you’re connected on Wi-Fi though. You can get calls on MagicJack though, unless you purchase a premium plan. You could get MagicJack Plus that will give you your own phone number. You can also choose your own area code! So if you want your business prospects to think you’re from the 202 or the 305 etc., you can.
Don’t prepare. The weekend before the class was to begin, I made a checklist and listed everything from remembering to unplug the phone during the meeting (to eliminate background noise) to posting a “do not ring the doorbell” sign on the front door. I know myself – I need to write things down or else I will forget. I had to attend a ceremony the morning of the class and when I rushed home to get ready, I was so flustered that I couldn’t find the checklist. I thought that I could wing it without my checklist and I was wrong. And of course my phone rang – loudly – and interrupted the meeting. Another note is that when giving a teleseminar via the phone, remember to turn off call waiting because I also discovered that people can hear all those clicks and the voice will cut out. Prepare!
